Tea Party

It’s time for tea! So grab a chair and pour a cuppa and get ready to get party.

BOOKS: We read Tea Party Rules by Ame Dyckman, illustrated by K.G. Campbell and Tea with Grandpa by Barney Saltzberg.

I had forgotten how short Tea with Grandpa is, but it always prompts a good discussion at the end of who you talk to on the phone or on a computer. Tea Party Rules is very cute. It’s a little long, but the kids like the joke that cub is not a teddy bear.

FLANNELBOARD:

“Five Cupcakes for Tea Time” by Kathryn Roach

Five cupcakes for tea time fun.
Use your best manners when you ask for one.
”May I have one please?” is what you say
As you take a yummy cupcake from the tray.

Repeat with descending numbers of cupcakes until you get to one.

One cupcake, alone does sit.
Use your best manners when you ask for it.
”May I have one please?” is what you say
As you take the yummy cupcake from the tray

We’ve had a great tea time treat
Sweet, yummy cupcakes were so good to eat
Saying please and thank you makes a tea party fun
Good manners are great for everyone!

This went over really well, though I nearly started a riot when I asked if the kids wanted to take one off the board. We had to do the rhyme more than once so everyone could take a cupcake.

ACTION RHYMES:

“I’m a Little Teapot”

I’m a little teapot
Short and stout
Here is my handle
Here is my spout
When I get all steamed up
Hear me shout,
”Tip me over
And pour me out!”

What kind of tea party storytime would this be, if we DIDN’T sing “I’m a Little Teapot.” While my crazy brain craves novelty, I have come to recognize that adults (and kids too!) like being able to sing along, and they appreciate having some songs that are familiar classics.

“Tea for Two”
from Richmond Public Library’s Storytime at Home page

Here’s a cup
Hold up one fist
and here’s a cup
Hold up your other fist
And here’s a pot of tea
Bring the thumb out of one fist
Pour a cup
Mime pouring a cup of tea from your thumb into your other hand
and pour a cup
Switch hands and do the same motion
And have a drink with me
Sip tea from your cup

DANCE BREAK:

We listened to “Animal Tea Party” by London Rhymes with our shakers. This is such a banger, you guys. I dare you to not get it stuck in your head for days.

CRAFT:

For our craft, we made little pouring teapots out of paper plates. I cut the plates out ahead of time and we colored them with tempera paint sticks (one of the best craft investments I have ever made for the library) and glued on some sequins.
